FO: Pigs in Mud Socks

Monkey Socks in Pigs in Mud Yarn
Pattern: Monkey by Cookie A from Knitty Winter 2006
Yarn: Sunnyside Ellen Louet Gems Sock Yarn in Shade Pigs in Mud (gifted by SussexYorkie)
Amount used: under 100g
Needles: 2.5mm Clover Takumi Bamboo dpns
Modifications: Picot edge cast on, 4 pattern repeats on the cuff
I understand now why this pattern has proved so popular - its quick and easy, yet maintains interest, and works really well with variagated yarn. I doubt this will be my only pair of Monkeys. This yarn is gorgeous to knit with, although possibly 2.25mm dpns would be better (not sure). Unfortunately trying to photograph things at 4.30pm on a cold, windy English afternoon is not conducive to quality shots but the yarn and pattern have worked really well together, and I will snap a better pic when improved light allows. These should have been finished two weeks ago but I have been either in bed or on the sofa for the last 10 days with the worst bout of flu I have ever had the misfortune to experience, and the symptoms are not substantially easing. All that knitting time going to waste!

Random Stash Generator Yarn for February
This is my Socks from Stash KAL yarn for February. The random generator selected A Swell Yarn Shop as my yarn brand and I chose this colourway as it seemed appropriate for the month of love. I think I shall just knit a plain pair of socks with contrasting cuffs/heels/toes as this seems to work best in the pictures I have seen of this yarn knitted up. Although I think it will be awhile before I feel up to casting on for this pair.

Stash Plans
* To try some of the many different sock yarn brands I have in my stash (currently 31!).
* To knit something from the knitting books I have had for awhile but not yet used, like Sensational Knitted Socks.
* To knit some of my favourite patterns that I keep wanting to knit but just dont seem to get round to, like Pomatomus, Vinnland and Bellatrix.
* To knit a pair of socks a month.
None of this is set in stone as I dont want my knitting to become a chore, and I see these more as things I would like to do this year. To help me, I have joined the Socks from Stash KAL, whereby you randomly choose a skein of yarn from stash and knit from that each month. I have decided to broaden the rules slightly. Each month I will randomly pick a yarn brand and then I will be able to choose the actual colourway I want to use that month. I couldn't do it any other way as the colours I like using change with each season. And I have to say, its really nice to revisit some of the beauties I have stashed away and actually see them knitted up.

More Birthday Gifts arrive in the Parlour
I must confess that I think it has been very easy not to buy yarn due to the lovely gifts that have continued to arrive in the Parlour for my recent birthday. And thank you all for your well wishes. I had a lovely day and it was wonderful to receive so many messages from friends. Left to right: 100g/600m of beautifully soft undyed, pure Swedish wool which also came with chocolate and some elderberry sweets from Maggan; 2 x 50g of Chameleon Colorworks Evolution in shade Sunflower (like spun gold!) bought with the Socktopus voucher from Gilraen; 2 x 50g of Blue Sky Alpacas sport weight in Grape and 100g of Knitglobal baby alpaca in Fawn from Terri; and then Elizabeth Zimmerman's Knitting Without Tears which I bought, along with a Harry Potter DVD and some cookery pamphlets, with the Amazon voucher from Noo. Thank you all for being so thoughtful!

Birthday Parcel from the Hufflepuff Cheerleader
And another surprise arrived this week. Some of you may remember I was recently the Hufflepuff Prefect for HSKS3, and my lovely Hufflepuff Cheerleader, Valerie, sent this wonderful parcel for my birthday. Valerie remembered me mentioning that it was impossible to get hold of Peaches and Cream here in the UK, so she sent 4 balls to help with my knitted dishcloth addiction. Valerie also included a really pretty notebook and some luscious notecards. Thank you so much hun!
PS: Oh, whats the green yarn at the back on the first picture I hear you ask? Well, I sort of bought that but I haven't broken my stashalong :) It is STR in Lemongrass but it is not intended for socks so therefore it doesn't break my "no buying sock yarn" rule. Plus, its for a specific project and I had nothing else in stash I could use instead. I'm going to knit a Chevron scarf with the Lemongrass and some Sherbert I already have. Stashalong not broken, oh no!

Happy Birthday!!!

Birthday Presents from the Wonderful MrP
The wonderful MrP surprised me with some great knitting stuff for my birthday. Front row left to right: STR Mediumweight in Hard Rock; STR Lightweight in Rook-y, Thraven and Korppi which are part of the new Raven clan, impossible to photograph but think jet black with shimmers of emerald, violet and plums. The pink pig slipper socks came from the lovely Charlotte, whilst MrP also gifted me with Mark Ronson's album, Folk Socks by Nancy Bush, Lush stuff and Green & Blacks chocolate, in addition to a year's subscription to Interweave Knits. The boy did good :)

Birthday Gifts from the Lovely Blossom
I have also been spoilt by my very kind online friends, including the lovely but blogless Blossom who sent me a gorgeous skein of Colinette Jitterbug, colourway Gauguin and a set of 2.75mm Knit Picks Harmonies dpns which I have wanted ever since I got my Harmonies interchangeable set. Thank you so much Blossom! I also received an Amazon book token from my friend Noo which I am currently debating whether to buy another sock book or a book on the history of food in Britain. Thanks Noo!

CT&Y Forum Winter Birthday Swap
I also took part in the Crafty Threads & Yarns Forum Winter Birthday Swap, and recently sent a gift to Farmgirl (who I believe is blogless). I was lucky enough to be sent these wonderful gifts but am not 100% sure who they are from as its a secret swap. I think it could either be Sprite from Yarnimals or Terri (although if its Terri she threw a red herring recently!). Thanks to my swap partner and I shall update here when I figure out who it is! There is a skein of Fiesta Ballet yarn in shade Clematis, which is simply stunning, along with a scarf pattern, a key ring, smellies and some gorgeous Flower Fairy fabric.
ETA: My swap partner was Cazzie from our forum, but I dont think she has a blog. Thank you so much Cazzie! Such a wonderful parcel :)
Thank you to all of you who have sent cards and birthday messages. I shall reply to you all soon but am taking today off; wallowing in the bath, reading a bit, knitting a bit, meeting up with friends and generally relaxing and enjoying!

Finishing off

Zingy Ballband Dishcloth from Mason-Dixon
Pattern: Ballband Dishcloth from Mason Dixon Knitting
Yarn: Peaches & Creme Cotton - Shades Sunburst (Solid) and Pink Lemonade (Ombre)
Amount used: Approx half a ball of each (slightly less of Sunburst)
Needles: 4mm Knit Picks Harmonies
Modifications: None
This is a really quick and easy pattern, that looks great knitted up. I love the vibrant Peaches & Creme colours and just wish they were easy to get hold of here in the UK. I will definitely be knitting this pattern again but must remember, as Kay and Ann say, must use the handknits.

Yarn Forward Miss Potter Mitts in YY Merino
Pattern: Miss Potter Mitts by Nicola Faull published in Yarn Forward Autumn 2007
Yarn: Yarn Yard Organic Merino in Shade Pudding
Amount used: approx 50g
Needles: 4mm Brittany Birch dpns
Notions: 1 stitch marker, row counter
Modifications: There is an error in the pattern at the thumb gusset which initially made this project very confusing. However, once I worked out the mistake this was a really easy knit (if anyone would like the corrections please email me). There were also no instructions on how to knit the picot edges so I used this method, which I use for the top of socks, to cast on. I then used exactly the same method to cast off but whereas with the cast on you knit the lives stitches together with the ones on the waste yarn, for the cast off you knit the live stitches together with a stitch you make by picking up the corresponding purl bump on the inside of the mitten (the purl bump you pick up needs to correspond with the base of the picot edge). You then cast off using the three needle bind off method. I much prefer this type of picot edge to the standard one, as this one is more perky and has more structure.
I love this pattern and will certainly be making more pairs as they are so very quick to make. The Yarn Yard Organic Merino is also one of my newest yarn loves. It is so soft and sproingy, and very well behaved. The colours are stunning but difficult to capture on camera.

Picot Edged Socks in Sweet Georgia River
Pattern: My Own
Yarn: Sweet Georgia Speed Demon in Shade River
Amount used: Have a bit left from a 100g skein
Needles: 3.25mm Crystal Palace Bamboo dpns
Notions: 3 stitch markers, row counter
Modifications: Cast on 50 stitches using the folded picot edge method here; follow standard basic sock pattern.
I have never been so utterly disappointed in a yarn as I am in Sweet Georgia and I cannot see what all the fuss is about (if you dont know, SG is taking a year out and her yarns sell for crazy amounts on ebay). I found the quality of the yarn very poor, and considering it is meant to be 100% merino, it almost seemed like there was some acrylic mixed in with it. It was frustrating to knit with as there were a lot of fibres that seemed to separate and it was very splitty. The colours are not even that much to write home about. Can you tell I really, really dont like it? My advice - save your money and buy some Posh Yarn Helena or Yarn Yard Organic Merino instead. I also struggled to get these socks to fit correctly but wont bore you with the details. I'm just glad I managed to trade all but one skein of my Sweet Georgia away.

Knitty Christmas Presents
Thank you all for your lovely seasonal wishes and I hope you all had a good Christmas. I had a wonderful Christmas and was lucky enough to receive some knitting gifts, as well as lots of other lovely things including enough Lush stuff to last me to well, urm, Easter! Yarn left to right: Dream in Color Smooshy Gothic Rose; followed by same in Beach Fog; Piece of Beauty BFL Sock Yarn in Friendly Ghost; STR Lightweight in Count Clukula and Sherbert. Middle: Silkwood Sock Kit in New England from the very lovely Tina, a £50 Wollmeise voucher to play with (how lucky?!) and some great knitting books. I have to say Cat Bordhi's new book is amazing and so innovative - might even tempt me to try toe-up again (did I really just say that?).
Its been a wonderful end to the year, and I am so looking forward to 2008. I have my first driving lesson next Friday, the day before my birthday when I am assured by MrP a flock of ravens will be here to celebrate with me :) Its also been great to end the year with my knitting mojo back intact and I have even resurrected an old WIP, the luscious Malabrigo scarf I started knitting too long ago. All that is left is for me to wish you all a very Happy New Year, pass on my sincere thanks for journeying with me through 2007 and my hope that 2008 is filled with much peace, love and laughter for you all.

Twas the night before Christmas...

Well, if its not been baked, made or sent by now, it will never happen! I am off to my mum's for the Big Christmas Eve bake off and consumption of Baileys whilst watching Carols from Kings. All that is left is to wish all my friends, old and new, a very, very Merry Christmas filled with peace, joy and laughter.

2007 Knitting Review
Favourite Yarn
Has to be a tie between Posh Yarn Emily and Yarn Yard Merino sock - both are just an absolute dream to knit with, and the colours come out so well.
Favourite Needles
Without doubt the Knitpicks Harmonies interchangeable set - pointy, pretty, smooth and versatile. Simply perfect!
Favourite New Pattern
I have to agree with Dee on this one and say the Irtfa'a Faroese Lace Shawl by the amazingly talented Anne Hanson. But another would be the Celtic Tote (scroll down) from the Winter issue of Interweave Knits.
Favourite Project
The Modifed Cowgirl Slipper socks I knitted earlier in the year as I finally felt like I got socks! Plus these fitted perfectly and were a dream to knit.
Favourite Knitting Blog
I cant just mention one of the many online friends I have so you are all included, and for someone whose blog I read but dont actually 'know', it would have to be Through the Loops. Its always so inspirational, with beautiful photographs and gorgeous knits - plus lots of patterns.
Favourite New Technique
Easy - the Old Norwegian/Twisted German Cast On. I discovered this when I knitted the Cowgirl Slipper socks and its now my firm favourite cast on for socks (and mittens etc).
Favourite Knitting Website
Only one option here imho - Ravelry. Its an amazing knitting resource and a vibrant, diverse, creative community.
Favourite Knitting Book
Victorian Lace Today by Jane Sowerby. Although I haven't knitted anything from it yet, it is a beautiful book and very inspirational.
Favourite Knitting Spot
Sat in my armchair next to the patio doors, overlooking the woodland garden which is full of wildlife, especially birds.
Favourite Knitting Partner
I think it would have to be the lovely Blossom, my online friend who will be visiting early in the New Year. We have similar taste in patterns, although she managed to get her Bellatrix socks finished before I've even started mine!
Life continues to be hectic, but wonderful and its a great way to end the year. I survived my first foray into primary school and absolutely loved it (although Year 1 are just a bit too teeny for me!). Its good to know that I'm travelling on the right path finally. And I got my first Biology exam results back - a grade C, but missed out on a B by one point, one!!! I'm really thrilled though because I am so not a science girl and this exam was sat the week my mum was in hospital so I missed out on any revision. Thanks for all the lovely comments about the PIF bags, and also the well wishes for the sick peeps who are now on the mend although it looks like my mum will have to have further surgery next year (but hopefully it will improve her quality of life so its all good).

Socktopus Prize Draw - Duets Sock Yarn Frost Berries
Oh, and I have made a momentous decision..... I am not going to buy any yarn in 2008 (gulp!). I have such a big stash already, and combined with the fact that I'm such a slow knitter and so busy, buying more yarn seems a bit pointless - well, beyond that 5 minutes of retail therapy :) The only thing I may stretch to is dk or aran weight for specific projects as most of my yarn is sock yarn, but even then, I will really have to love it to buy it. Luckily though, I won the prize draw on the Socktopus blog for some gorgeous Duets Sock Yarn - thank you so much Alice! I will just have to keep thinking of that VW Beetle in black with pink pig trotters painted onto it that I will one day have if I pass my driving test (which is dependent on me being able to afford lessons!). I will check back in before Christmas to wish you all well and let you know if mum's scarf is destined to be a Christmas or Mother's Day gift :)
PS: And if you haven't seen The Golden Compass yet, make sure you fit in a trip to the cinema. Its such a sumptuous film and a sheer joy to watch - I much preferred it to the book.
